Route and geography
Beginning near Columbia, I-77 runs north through rolling Piedmont terrain to Charlotte, where it serves as the principal freeway into Uptown. From there it ascends the Blue Ridge Mountains via Virginia’s noted Fancy Gap grade and passes through the Big Walker and East River Mountain Tunnels. In West Virginia, it overlaps the tolled West Virginia Turnpike before following the Kanawha River to Charleston. Entering Ohio, it proceeds through the Ohio River Valley and the industrial corridor of Canton–Akron before ending in downtown Cleveland.
Economic and transportation role
I-77 is a vital freight and passenger corridor linking the Southeast with the Midwest. It intersects major east–west interstates including I-20, I-40, I-64, I-70, I-76, I-80, I-81, I-85 and I-90, facilitating the movement of goods between southern manufacturing centers and Great Lakes industries. Ohio designates portions as the “Vietnam Veterans of America Highway.” The route also supports tourism, serving access points to the Appalachian Mountains and Lake Erie.
Current and future projects
Recent and planned improvements focus on congestion management and regional access. North Carolina’s I-77 South Express Lanes Project is adding managed toll lanes between the South Carolina line and Uptown Charlotte. In South Carolina, the I-77 Panther Interchange Project is creating new access for regional development near Rock Hill. Ongoing maintenance and modernization continue along the corridor, including intelligent-transportation systems and ramp upgrades in West Virginia.
